Motor Carrier / DOT Numbers — Same Day

Starting a new trucking operation? NITIC helps new motor carriers get properly registered with the FMCSA fast — including MC# and USDOT numbers.

What is a USDOT Number?

A USDOT (US Department of Transportation) number is a unique identifier assigned to commercial motor vehicles operating in interstate commerce. It is used to track safety records, inspections, crashes, investigations, and audits of commercial vehicles. Most commercial trucking operations are required to have a USDOT number.

What is an MC Number?

An MC (Motor Carrier) number is the operating authority issued by the FMCSA to carriers who transport federally regulated commodities for hire across state lines. You must have an active MC number to legally operate as a for-hire carrier in interstate commerce.

The Registration Process

  1. Apply for USDOT Number — File Form MCS-150 through the FMCSA SAFER system. USDOT numbers are typically issued the same day.
  2. Apply for MC Operating Authority — File Form OP-1 through FMCSA. MC numbers become active after a 10-business-day waiting period once insurance and process agent filings are on file.
  3. File Insurance (BMC-91/91X) — Your insurance carrier must file Form BMC-91 (liability) and BMC-91X (cargo) directly with FMCSA. NITIC handles these filings at no extra charge.
  4. File BOC-3 (Process Agent) — Designate a process agent in all states where you operate. NITIC can refer you to a service for this filing.
  5. Authority Becomes Active — After 10 business days from when all required filings are received, your operating authority becomes active.
